Fantastic Stylus — Best one I have tried, August 1, 2011

This is exactly what I was looking for — a stylus that was not too small, not too long, high quality construction, and didn’t have a clip on it (while useful for hanging or storing in a shirt pocket, when prose it is very grating in my hand). Stylus tip has just enough friction and is just the right rigidity — I had a Targus stylus I tried before this and it had too soft a tip. Bonus for also having the ability to replace the tip when it wears out (I don’t know of any other stylus that can do this) — and it even comes with an extra tip.

While I haven’t used all the styluses out there, compared to the ones I have used, this is by far the best one.

I have stout fingers, so prefer to use a stylus on my iPad, and the elago is the fourth brand of styli I’ve tried. The others are branded Nataal, Kensington, and BoxWave. Capacitive styli tips are necessarily stout for technological reasons, and they wear out or lose their effectiveness over time. Wacom makes an expensive (list price $29.95) capacitive stylus the tips of which are consumable, but as far as I can determine, they do not ship with an extra tip or tips.

I reckon it is unfortunate that most capacitive styli are marketed in a way that burdens consumers with having to constantly replace them with groundbreaking new ones, which would not be the case if, like mechanical pencils and many ordinary pens (ballpoint, fountain, etc.), replacement tips (or leads, refills, etc.) were readily available at reasonable prices. So kudos to elago for at smallest amount selling three models of styli (the Slim, Grip and Rustic) with consumable tips and including a replacement tip. I say at smallest amount because at present, elago Consumable Tips have a list price of $9.99 with Amazon’s selling price life $4.99, and I reckon both prices are too high.

The aforementioned linked-to Nataal has a slimmer tip than the elago, Kensington, and Boxwave styli, and while I preferred its slimmer tip, it not only wore out on me (after admittedly hard use) but tore (all through a approximate game of Mad Birds). In my experience, worn capacitive styli require more pressure to be detected by capacitive screens, and the additional pressure of course accelerates the rate at which they wear.

I find the tip of the elago unremarkable in how it really feels to use it (a very subjective thing), but the fact that it came with an extra tip compensates for that.

It would be nice to see capacitive styli capable of using consumable tips sold with more than one extra tip, and to see extra tips sold at lower prices than the contemporary price for replacement elago tips. But in the meantime, the elago under review is functional and a bargain. Elago started as a professional design company in 2002, specializing in industrial and packaging design, and the elago Stylus Slim comes in a perfectly designed package and would thus make a nice albeit inexpensive gift for the right person.

I wanted a nice stylus for my ipad and samsung galaxy s2. This one is nice, perfectly cylindrical, heavy, feels excellent in your hand.. and its cool looking. It comes with a free second tip and works excellent. I like using it to glide around on my ipad, but if your looking for something for prose I would try one of those pen point kinda of stylus’. its harder to see where your prose with these rubber end kind.
