It is what it is…, May 6, 2014

So I started my journey trying to find the “perfect” IPAD Air case. Unfortunately, I don’t reckon one exists! My requirements are simple and mainly children oriented: Full Body protection with ample shock absorption for drops… integrated screen bodyguard for the rare spill… integrated kick stand for both portrait and landscape… front cover… and somewhat sylish… I’ve yet to find one, so I picked this cheaper type because… well… it was cheap. I’m just buying time until I find another. I’m giving it a 4 because it met or exceeded my expectations, which were low because of the low price and it’s not of poorer quality than I thought it would be, probably a small better, but only for my function… not exactly ideal to protect my $800 investment long term… After receiving this item, here are my observations:

    PROs
    1. Cheap! (inexpensive)
    2. The “rubbery” outside material offers some nominal protection, not much shock protection, but some nonetheless…
    3. The case goes together quite well.
    4. The front has a raise beveled edge to keep the screen recessed which helps it from life scratched when laying down on flat surfaces.
    5. Kick stand works perfectly. Just a small tight to open… but serves the function in both portrait and landscape!
    6. All holes line up nicely, and integrated buttons work well with IPAD buttons…
    7. Company is very responsive… was to me anyway…

    CONs
    1. Cheap! You can tell by the picture, so it was expected, but the plastic for the entire case is very cheap. It’s not like a rugged plastic, it’s like kids’ toy plastic. Like I said, you can tell by the picture, but it bears repeating.
    2. The case life plastic, probably won’t hold up to much… even with the rubber on the outside
    3. There is no inside foam or anything to act as shock absorption inside the case, just have to lay the IPAD directly on/in the plastic. Since the case is made of cheap plastic, I worried about the case really scratching the back of the IPAD. I would have used a very thin layer of foam or rubber, but didn’t have any clever, so I just cut a piece of paper to fit between the IPAD and the case. Foam or rubber would be a better insulator against shock, but I was mainly concerned about scratching the back of my new IPAD, so paper was a instant remedy to ease my mind.
    4. The built-in stylus doesn’t work
    5. The picture is not exactly what I received, but close… so not sure if there is a “version difference” or ?
    6. The built-in screen bodyguard wasn’t attached to the faceplate, so it won’t protect against the rare spill of liquid… I mean… the screen bodyguard is place on the IPAD screen itself, so it will protect the screen, but even with a small spill, liquid will run under the beveled faceplate and into the back of the case. So it’s not “whole body protection” in my mind. Reckon toddler playing and drinking at the same time. ; – )

I can’t see this design offering much more than basic protection which is fine for me right now. Here are my other observations of full body suitcases as I peruse the internet for the elusive perfect one:

    1) Otterbox Defender – want to buy this, arguably the best protection of all! I have numerous OB phone suitcases, and I like the front cover… BUT… it doubles as a stand, and I’m not liking that concept… AND I feel like the 4 corners of the front cover will break with constant use, and in fact reviewers have stated that is ordinary rendering it useless as a cover… and it’s expensive… so probably not buying…
    2) Griffin Survivor – Also a most rugged case, arguably better than the OB, very stylish, but no front cover. And I especially don’t like the concept of a removable stand that can get lost (even though it attaches, we know how things get lost don’t we?!)… and the stand is not very secure… and only works in landscape, not also portrait. This is the largest detraction from this case, otherwise, I’d buy it today!
    3) Lifeproof – Also rugged and waterproof! But again, no stand. And I would need to take a loan out to buy it… the MOST expensive!
    4) Pelican Pro Gear Vault – Built like a tank! It has everything I’m looking for in the way of protection and usability… I may end up buying this as a permanent case… the only thing… though I like the rugged looks myself, it’s not very stylish to the younger generation… and it’s bulky… and it’s expensive… but this is my favorite of all I’ve seen to date…
    5) SUPCASE Beetle – Seems to be made well… but no front cover… and no stand at all.
    6) Bolkin Hybrid Armor – Not sure about the knockoffs (Bolkin – Belkin)… no front cover… seems to be similarly cheap plastic with minimal shock protection…
    7) i-Blason ArmorBox 2 – would seem to have decent shock protection… but again no front cover… kickstand only works in landscape, not portrait…

I unquestionably like this case, especially because of the kickstand, but, the way it was made makes it a fragile component. The pin that secures the kickstand to the case is too small and/or not secured we’ll enough and can easily pop out of place from normal wear and tear. The way it works is similar to a pin that secures a watch to its band. But for me, once the pin popped out the first time it never wanted to stay in place again. I didn’t want to go through the hassle of sending it back and hoping a new one would be made differently, plus I really like the looks of this case so it was time to get creative. As it turns out, a regular size paper clip has roughly the same circumference as the pin. So I took the paper clip and cut off the straightest section of it. Then I trimmed it to the entire length of the kickstand housing on the back of the case. Next I lined up where the pin would exit out of the sides of the plastic housing if it were long enough, marked the spot on both sides, heated the pin over a flame (holding it with pliers of course so I didn’t burn myself), and pushed the pin through, melting a hole for the new pin to anchor through. If done correctly the pin should slide all the way through both holes and the kickstand. This results in a nearly unbreakable kickstand that can handle a lot of abuse. I certainly don’t abuse my devices but this one didn’t need much coaxing to break. If you are going to try this technique, it helps to measure the pin so it is a small bit longer than the edges of the housing, not by much, just a mm or 2 extra on each side. That’s what I did and it it has never given me any problems. Also make sure the silicone cover is off when performing the surgery. Now I have an awesome rock solid case that I know will last a very long time. That’s why I give it 4 stars.

I really like this case! I shattered the glass surrounding my home button and needed a cheap instant fix and this is more than I expected. It comes with a screen bodyguard which is fantastic. Its very simple to place on, and a small hard to take off but thats a excellent thing. Its solid and feels very sturdy. Wish I could have one in every color!
