This case really is near perfect.
Considering the mini is going even more places with me than my old iPad, finding a comfortable & enjoyable case is crucial. It is the tactile experience of the device that you’re going to touch thousands of times. It had to:
    * Be slim, not ruin the beautiful form factor.
    * Provide a tactile improvement over the mini itself. Caseless, I handle an iPad like glass, with a cover I handle like a book. This is a world of difference in the day-to-day life with the ipad.
    * Be luxurious. It shouldn’t cheapen the aesthetic of an already elegant device.
    * Cover both sides. It’s about a sure-grip as well as protection.
    * Provide a relatively low-level of protection. I’m easy on my phones & pads, so I felt I could forego shock protection that would bulk it up.
    * Not be “fiddly”. I don’t want to unlatch, unclip, twist, snap, de-sleeve or anything other than naturally use the iPad.

This case does all that, expertly.
I’ve been handling my naked iPad like the freakishly expensive slab of high-tech, glass and metal that it is. As soon as I put this case on it, the mini feels like a well-worn companion that belongs with me. The leather feels great, and I know it will only improve as it wears in. The fit and finish is top-notch.

    The bad:
[update] The stand is pretty stupid. The magnet needs to be much stronger. It’s perfectly fine to prop and watch Netflix, but if you start tapping away on apps, the stand collapses. I like the ‘slot’ design of the first ipad frog-skin case better. I’m dropping my rating from 5 to 4 to reflect this. [/Update]
The magnet should be stronger. If you hold it upside down the flap wont hold. (How often will it matter tho?)
You have to really push the volume buttons. (May get better w/ use.)
Headphone port could be marginally larger. (Tho works with my Bose fine-if a tight fit.)
Fractionally more protection would be welcomed.
    Very expensive.

    [revised] Conclusion:
The case is near perfect, and better than my now 3-star ranking suggests. However it sent me into a blind range every time the stand collapsed under normal use. I’m using the mini far more than my last big iPad, and the frequency of collapses became intolerable for something at this (or any) price point. On many fronts it’s brilliant, but I’m returning it for a single flaw I can’t endure.

So, after reaching the end of the internet reviewing iPad mini cases, I ordered the Jison vintage case, and it arrived today. It is better in almost every dimension. Without reviewing another case here, I will say my collapses stopped. The 3 panel stand design will never be perfect, but the Jison takes a hurricane to collapse, where the Apple smart case needs merely a draft. The Jison case is here btw: Jisoncase Vintage Genuine Leather Smart Cover Case for iPad mini & iPad mini with Retina display, JS-IDM-01A20-Brown

Do yourself a favor and get the best case you can find, whatever it may be.. The case is an integral part of whole experience, and deserves to be more than an afterthought.

A lot to like about this case but…., January 5, 2014

This case has a lot of great qualities. It is slim, it is fit perfectly, the leather is high quality and has a great feel and smell, it has the sleep/wake function, and it offers a landscape and typing stand. However there were a few deal breakers for me and they had to do with the stand functionality. The stand is not very firm or reliable. I like to stand my ipad mini in landscape mode while I lay in bed and the stand just isn’t good enough to prop it up well on an uneven surface of a bed. Not only that, but the magnets are not strong enough to reliably hold the stand in place and when it does work, I find that it holds the ipad too vertical.

If you don’t really need to use the case as a stand, I would say this is one of the sexiest cases you can get for your mini. Everything is perfectly aligned and a perfect fit. The case feels and looks extremely high quality despite not offering the most protection. If you’re careful with your mini and don’t need the stand functionality, then this might be the case for you. Like I said, there is a lot to like about this case but for me, there is enough not to like that it will not be what I use on my Mini Retina.

Not the retail version of this case, December 4, 2014

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
Amazon is shipping these cases without the retail packaging. This is the second one I’ve gotten which “ships from and sold by Amazon” without the retail packaging box, just placed in a plastic bag. On this second one, they shipped it in the same box as a heavy cast iron skillet. When it arrived, the front of the case didn’t align with the back, the bottom of the front cover was curled up due to being pushed into the cavity of the case, and the bridge over the lightning connector was distorted and nearly broken. The plastic bag the case was in was significantly scratched up. Of course, I returned it.

Without the retail packaging, it’s embarrasing to give it as a gift!

Outside of Amazon not supplying in the retail box, it’s a pretty nice case. I have another one bought from Apple. They’re light, give a measure of drop protection, and look good. They’re not robust at holding the iPad nearly vertically for watching movies, or even horizontally for typing. They’re good if you want to hold your pad for reading. It would get 3 stars out of 5 were it not for the fact that Amazon is not selling the retail version and they don’t annotate that fact.
