Tight fit, solid case, September 22, 2012

The seller was one of the first to offer an iPhone 5 case, a full week before the iPhone 5 launch. They ran a promotion for about 85% off their regular price, and they promised launch-day delivery (Sep. 21), which I was very skeptical about. But, lo-and-behold, a few hours after UPS dropped off my iPhone 5, USPS had delivered my KaysCase. Although the case is a tight fit around the phone, it’s a perfect fit that goes on without scratching the aluminum sides. The left and right bumpers of the case are hard plastic, while the back/top/bottom are rubber-ish TPU. The backside has been “sanded” to make it non-stick (it won’t turn your pocket inside-out when you slide the phone out since it doesn’t grip anything). The sides of the case wrap around the front by a millimeter or two, so you can place your phone face-down without scratching the front. I ordered two custom suitcases from SkinIt, but now I’m considering cancelling that order since SkinIt doesn’t even know when they’ll be able to start manufacturing their suitcases (I ordered it because they had a buy-1-get-1-free pre-order sale). I’m extremely surprised at the quality, fit and fiish on this KaysCase. If I choose to use my SkinIt case when it comes in, this would make a excellent gift to someone else since it honestly feels like a case that costs about $15 or more.

    Amazon Verified Buy(What’s this?)

Update: I pre-ordered this case, so it may have been part of an early batch. Some other reviewers have said that some things aren’t accurate anymore (e.g., new ones have hideous “KaysCase” branding).

The soft skin case is the best you can get for the price. It’s not “sticky” like many of the silicone ones and won’t attract dust in your pocket as quickly as them. It fits snugly on the iPhone 5 but was not hard at all to install. The case’s edge on the front seems to protrude just enough to prevent hurt to the screen in case of a drop onto a flat surface. (But, I can’t say for sure because I’m not willing to test this. :p) The molding is not exactly perfect, but at smallest amount it doesn’t impair usage of any of the buttons or switches on the iPhone. The power/lock and volume up/down buttons are covered while the mute switch and earphone jack + speakers + Lightning port along the bottom are completely open. The case feels more solid than most other soft ones I’ve seen, yet it doesn’t add much consequence to the phone. I bought both the hard and soft versions of this case and went with this one in the end; hopefully it’ll absorb more of the impact in the event of a drop. The section where the mold is cut could have been in a more inconspicuous spot than a random segment along the outside left edge of the back of the phone, but it’s not easily noticeable. Another thing to note is that there is no annoying branding everyplace. It doesn’t affect my rating of the product’s effectiveness, but this piece of info might be useful for people like me who despise how many other case manufacturers try to rebrand the phone by putting a logo on the case. I also be grateful for the fact that there is no stupid circle cut out of the back to expose the Apple logo on the back of the iPhone; this eliminates another would-be entry point for dust.

Although sufficient for its primary role, the screen bodyguard is not as brilliant as the case it comes with. Aesthetics are vital in this type of product, so every imperfection stands out even more. The screen bodyguard is cut to the shape of the iPhone 5 very accurately, but that’s where my praise ends. The cutout for the front camera + top speaker is shifted to the left by about 2.5mm. The Home button cutout is not as terrible; it’s shifted to the right about 1mm. What tells me that the QC isn’t the best is the opposing directions that the cuts are misplaced. The rest of attributes are mediocre: it doesn’t add extra glare to the screen; it feels neither too thin & cheap nor thick & unusable; and it’s smooth to the touch, unlike some other bargain protectors that feel ridged or bumpy (and sometimes even sticky) when swiping. Note: The particular screen bodyguard that I’m currently using had a nick along the bottom which couldn’t be smoothed out, so there is a small air bubble. I tried to take this into account and still provide an unbiased review of it. Guess it’s a excellent the hard case comes with one too!

By and large this product package provides outstanding value, and at this price point it can’t be beat.

I ordered the product the same day I preordered the iPhone 5 (and before the schematics were released by Apple), so obviously my buy was based on hoping it was the right one. It is. Very light consequence. It covers the front frame of the phone. No problems with headphones at all. Fantastic buy.
