I have an iPad and have been looking for a stylus to be able to use it like a writing tablet. I have tried the Adonit Jot Pro, Targus and Griffin Stylus, and now the New Trent stylus. They all have their good and bad points but this is my experience with the New Trent product and how it compared to the others.

Size: The stylus is short. I am a pretty tall guy and I have long, skinny fingers. Short writing instruments are a challenge for me if they are not long enough for the top of the instrument to sit in the space between my thumb and hand. This stylus isn’t long enough and so I found myself having to change the way I held it. I found that unnatural but not difficult to do.

Weight: This stylus, compared to the weighted Jot Pro, is extremely light. If you like holding on to your writing instrument and feeling some weight, this won’t do it for you. But it turns out the weight is a plus for me considering the short size. I found that I was not fighting the weight to keep control because the stylus was shorter than I like.

Not-a-Stylus: This stylus has a ball point pen built in. It’s the first stylus I have tried that had an extra capability, and I have found myself actually using the pen as much as the stylus side! The pen writes smoothly and evenly, and is easy to expose and retract. It is a really nice feature to have.

Stylus: Ok, so how about that capacitive mesh stylus? Looking at the photo I didn’t really have an expectation for the stylus end, so when I got it I was a little surprised. At first it reminded me of a Q-Tip that wasn’t wound tight. It doesn’t sag off the side or anything but it is “soft”. The Targus stylus is a rubber tip and is hard, giving almost nothing when using it to write or draw. The Adonit jot Pro is a hard metal ball. The New Trent stylus felt much less like a pen and more like a paint brush, making for very smooth transition to the surface when putting the stylus down to write. There was no hard, abrupt transition.

Function: This is the biggie for me. How well does it actually work? And how does that compare to the others I have used? New Trent wins, hands down. Surprised? I was too, but I have a very specific reason: it doesn’t stick! My iPad is protected by a BodyGardz screen protector. The Adonit Jot Pro has a plastic disk on the end and it grabs the screen like crazy! I love the weight but with the screen protector it just isn’t very functional. Using the Targus and Griffin styli they tend to hop or skip as they stick and then release from the display. Granted, this is only when I am trying to write notes and I press too hard but that’s how I use it. The New Trent stylus is a smooth movement. For me that is most important.

I would change two things about it: length and weight. Longer and heavier would give it an easier to grasp, more solid feel. Would I buy it again? Maybe. If they make the changes I recommend, absolutely.
