This is the case to get if you want real leather, great looks, ample protection, and a very well designed and stable horizontal stand. Plus there’s a place to keep a stylus inside which is a rare feature.

It misses the 5 star mark (just barely) because it doesnt have the magnetic auto on/off feature that apple’s smart case and a growing number of aftermarket cases have. I don’t understand why ALL iPad 2 cases don’t have this feature since it would only add 20 cents to the manufacturing cost (to put a small magnet under the inside flap). Also, I can’t line the camera lens up just right with the opening as not to have a shadow visible in the upper left corner of videos I shoot if I don’t first remove the iPad from the case. Not a huge deal since I really can’t see myself whipping out the iPad instead of the iPhone for a video shoot, but its an annoyance all the same.

So what’s great about this case you ask?
    1. It protects your iPad extremely well without being too bulky.
    2. This one is huge for me: the horizontal stand is fantastic. It’s very stable in all three standing positions and has an almost-flat typing position that I am using to type this review. All (and I mean *all*) the other cases I tried were to some degree flimsy when using them horizontally. The Truss has deep grooves that keep the iPad from slipping when pressure is applied. I find myself using my iPad in horizontal mode 90% of the time since getting this case.
    3. It looks great. Very subdued and would fit in well anywhere even corporate settings.

One more thing: you should be aware that Targus did a substantial overhaul of last year’s Truss for the iPad 1 and although the 1st gen will work with this case don’t buy last years version if you have an iPad 2. I made this mistake before realizing there is a difference. The most obvious physical difference is the cutout for the camera on the new model.

An otherwise fantastic case with a major design flaw, December 28, 2011

I’m extremely pleased with the static functionality and protection this case provides my iPad 2, however, one must plan to leave one’s iPad in this case permanently if one is to avoid ripping the case apart.

After using the Targus case for a week, the stitching associated with one of the two corner supports is unraveling — a few more tugs and the entire corner will detach. The reason for this deterioration has to do with removing the iPad from the case. In order to free the iPad, one must pull at least one of the corner supports (if you operate with some skill, otherwise you need to pull on both) a fair distance. The corner supports are not inherently elastic, so pulling on them understandably places a great deal of strain on the stitching.

This problem is certainly a flaw of the design. Some method of easily removing the iPad from the case, without damaging the case in the process, is surely not too much to expect.

Otherwise, I adore the case’s functionality and protection. It’s not too bulky and it provides fairly decent back, front, and side protection for my device (although I don’t think the case would assist much if one were to drop an iPad from a great distance — for general use it provides a sufficient amount of protection). The ability to fold the front cover entirely back and use the iPad as one naturally would, and the ability to use the three slots (visible in the product images) as prop points when sitting the case and iPad on a tabletop is wonderful.

Some Amazon reviewers have complained about the fit of the iPad 2 into this particular case. Depending upon how one holds the case to view the iPad, the device can shift an acceptable bit sideways — favoring the side supports on either side. This slight shifting means that the camera hole provided on the back of the case does not always meet the rear camera of the iPad 2. This is easily remedied by simply nudging the iPad left, right, and perhaps marginally up, down to meet the camera hole. That is a simple, quick fix that has more to do with the semi-snug fit of the case to the device than it does with the design or cut of the case. Note: I find the “semi-snug” fit to be just right; not too tight so as to potentially apply stress to the chassis of the iPad, and not too loose that the iPad would ever slip out.

But to maintain this level of functionality, one must leave one’s iPad in the case — more or less — permanently. Removing the iPad requires tugging on parts of the case that eventually amount to damage.

I’ve purchased three of these cases so far — for myself and family members — and have gifted them with the warning to remove the iPad as little as possible.

First off I want to say that the look and quality of this is first rate. If I was rating on those alone it would get a 5/5. Sadly that is all that I can say that is positive about this case.

    1. The hole on the back is not for the camera, if you’re looking for a cover to use with the rear camera, this is not the cover you want.
    2. The top right corner hold makes it difficult to use the mute/rotate lock slider. I am consistently pushing the tab back to get at the slider.
    3. The overall fit of the ipad 2 into the case is awful. The left side fits nice and snug from top to the bottom mainly due to the full length coverage, however the two right corners (top and bottom)are so loose that there is nearly a 1/4″ of movement back and forth and side to side.I have resorted to placing some adhesive window foam tape into the corner tabs to stop this movement. BUT every time i take the ipad out to use the rear camera (see #1) I have to re-aaply the foam.

Overall I am really bummed and I am currently looking for another option.
